Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), also called nosocomial infections, are infections patients develop while receiving care for another condition, in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient surgery centers or dialysis clinics. In hospitals, an infection is generally counted as healthcare-associated when it appears on or after the third day of admission. Common types include pneumonia, surgical site infections, gastrointestinal infections such as C. difficile, bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections. CDC's most recent survey found that about 1 in 38 U.S. hospital patients had at least one HAI in 2023.
